My university has recently issued us lecturers with some guidance to pass on to third year undergraduates and postgraduates on the dangers of applying for jobs online. I thought the words of advice they offer on how to protect yourself from identity theft would be very useful to my blog readers too.

Credit crunch: the impact on Higher Education?

Talk of the financial crisis is difficult to avoid: on both sides of the Atlantic those in banking, law and related sectors are beginning to feel the pinch. But what impact could the credit crunch, recession and general economic implosion have on Higher Education and those who work in it? This topic is addressed by a fascinating article in The Chronicle this week and I thought I’d try to look at the UK side of the story.

Another day in the life….

Academic buzzword no. 1 : skills!

This week I have been thinking about the structure and content of my undergraduate courses because as a department we are mulling over ideas about where to go in the future. As much as it disappoints me, 99.9% of my students do not want to become historians and nothing I can say or do will change their minds. So I must make sure that, as well as reaching the required intellectual standard to pass their degrees, I can give them some useful skills to take with them into the world of work.
