The Pitfalls of Publishing!

This week I have been getting a book ready for publication. The book contains eleven conference papers presented by eleven different authors so managing this project is difficult. I have to juggle my needs and desires with those of my co-editor, the authors and the publishers. This balancing act is one that many academics will experience during their careers and my advice to postgraduates is to try to produce an edited collection as early on in your career as possible.

Teaching practice: should we use DVDs in class?

Having written about research last week, I thought I’d use today’s blog entry to discuss something in teaching that has been causing me concern for a while: the use of DVDs or videos . It’s something we do fairly often in the humanities, especially for subjects that really lend themselves to visual representation. But is it the best way to teach our students?

Funding: the never-ending search

One of my academic new year’s resolutions is to devote more time to trying to find external funding for my research projects. We don’t have a sabbatical system at my university, so consequently if I want to take time off teaching in order to complete the research on my next book, then I have to find the money myself. This is easier said than done of course…

Happy New Year…and RAE thoughts!

I hope you have been able to recharge your batteries over the Christmas break and now feel ready to tackle 2009 and all that it may bring. Perhaps one new year’s resolution might be to dedicate more time to career development/building?! However, the focus of many researchers’ thoughts just now are the RAE results and what it means for then personally and also for the institutions they work for.
