This issue is one that will be relevant for postgraduates, lecturers and retired academics too: the thorny question of who gets the best office space, or indeed any office space at all! Although it might sound rather insignificant in the scheme of things, your office space allocation can have serious ramifications on your teaching and research life.

Jobseeking tips for those who already have a job

The title of this week’s blog entry may seem somewhat contradictory. If someone has a job, surely they can’t need advice on how to find another one! They have been hired in one position, so surely they will know what to do when it comes to being hired in another? Well, you would think so, but evidence seems to suggest that getting your second (or third or fourth or fifth) academic job can be just as challenging as getting the first. So this week’s post is for those already in a teaching or research job, but fancying a move.

Do you have any hobbies? What to include on application forms!

A thought-provoking article in this week’s Chronicle has given me the topic for this week’s blog and it’s a question that I really don’t know the answer to, so please help me (and thousands of jobseekers) out! Should you include information in your application about hobbies to make you sounded like a rounded, personable individual? Or should you pretend that you only live for your academic work and spend all your waking moments thinking about your research?!

Commuting…a reassessment.

This morning seems like a good time to have another think about commuting. For those of you not based in the UK, the whole country is having what reporters are calling a ’snow event’! I am feeling slightly alarmed at having to brave the weather for my 2 hour journey to Manchester, but also resigned to my fate.  But it certainly makes me reassess the wisdom of living so far from my place of work.
