What I found doing my (non-creative writing) PhD was that any other writing I did outside of it, even creatively stimulating and fulfilling, I felt guilty about. Because it wasn't to do with the PhD and nothing exists outside the PhD! (I had a bit of tunnel vision). I think it's so important to indulge in a variety of writing and remind yourself that you exist in a world beyond your field of study! And write!

That's an interesting premise! Thanks so much for the invitation, wow! I will have a look at your submissions policy and I will definitely send you my novel when it is finished…hopefully by the end of summer.

Hi Kat Dawes; I just chanced upon your blog entry in passing through, but both the blog and the information about yourself were of great interest. I represent a young fiction publishing house, New Dawn Publishers Ltd, which employs a unique submissions policy- unsolicited submissions are accepted, but only from students or graduates of degrees which relate to the field of creative writing. At the moment, we're actively on the lookout for promising new authors to publish in the coming semester, and we would be honoured if you would consider submitting your novel to us. Thank you for your time, and we hope to hear from you soon... fingers crossed...

I forget things too much! So this is something that, while I'm finding I don't use it extensively, is a bit of fun that comes in handy sometimes.

I think mind-mapping on paper has been around for ages, it's just a different way of representing the outline/character sketch. I'm a geek, I admit it, so I do love the applications that bring it up to date, but it's just a diagrammatic representation of ideas, not such a shortcut or latest and greatest. I definitely agree that the process of writing is very important, and I'm interested in all the possible ways of doing it.

Hello Nicola,

How great to hear from you. I have just read your post and I think what you say is true. If we could gently dismantle the things that keep students and lecturers at a distance from each other so much could be gained. When I was an undergraduate I found that such relationships could be built with lecturers because of the "soft" zones in which we could meet - discussion societies, theatre visits - those sorts of things. But there's so little space for those things - I seem to find now. Why is this? We do need to allow students and lecturers to be a bit more than givers and receivers of teaching "messages." (Scary word)

Looking forward to reading more about your research and teaching progress : )
