About Karen Mcaulay

Karen McAulay is a music librarian by career, and a musicologist by inclination, which explains why she undertook doctoral research whilst holding down a full-time music librarian job. Having achieved the magical postnominals, she now indulges her research proclivities by exploring paratexts in early 19th century Celtic song collections, and draws upon her research experience on a regular basis when assisting staff and students with their information needs.

Does having a PhD change anything?

I graduated with my PhD in December 2009, having studied for my doctorate concurrently with a full-time professional librarianship job. Once I’d got the PhD, I intended to continue my dual existence as librarian and independent researcher. This wasn’t what … Read More »

Submission accomplished

So that’s it.  My book went to the Post Office, and its feet barely touched the ground before it was whisked away to the sorting office.  To anyone who has already published a book, my apologies, but you’ll probably agree … Read More »

In two minds …

In an employment climate where it’s hard to get any suitable job, I consider myself fortunate to be a music librarian 9-5, even though it makes my extra-mural research efforts rather exhausting at times. If I haven’t posted here much … Read More »

I don’t stamp books!

What, people ask, does a music librarian do? I suppose you lend music. You must play a lot of music. Do you read a lot of books, too? Just supposing you were contemplating a career in music librarianship, let me … Read More »

Freshers Weeks (past and present)

I feel like Methuselah when I confess that this is my twenty-fifth fresher’s week in my present job.  When I started here, I would smile fondly at all the bright young things just a decade or so younger than myself, … Read More »

What’s in a name?

I feel like an expert in rebranding, since our institution had a namechange at the beginning of this month.  And I only had the pleasure of changing library leaflets – that was a marathon enough.  (Change the name, change the … Read More »

Minstrels, metaphors and social media

One of the dubious joys of being dual-qualified is the sensation of being pulled in [at least] two directions at any given time.  For example, this summer I spoke at the IAML Music Libraries’ international conference in Dublin.  My subject … Read More »

Web 2.0 : the perils of social media

I truly didn’t intend to spend my week’s leave entangled in social media!  But I’m a compulsive blogger.  In my own defence, I don’t blog about my private life – this is all work-related.  But – just as some people … Read More »
