The first three points for a successful job interview were covered in my previous blog entry. In this post I want to round up the 7 tips, which I hope will help you to get your dream job.
1. Read the advertisement carefully
Research the company and their methods. You want to put yourself across as being well suited for the job. This means your approach when going for a job in a company who values serious grammar study is entirely different to your approach when going for a job at a company where they teach in a very relaxed and fun setting. The company website will no doubt giving insights into their methods and ideas. Familiarise yourself with their ethos.
2. Asking questions
The period at the end of the interview where you are asked if you have any questions is a golden opportunity. You could ask about the company culture, life in that area, further details on their teaching methods, or any number of things. Just ask something as it shows you are an intelligent person, and you should really have endless questions at this stage.
3. Personality
We are often told that being oneself is vital at all times. It’s also vital in the job interview to emphasise certain parts of your personality. Enthusiasm is something that employers and students love. Make sure you show yourself to be keen, not just for teaching in general, but for that specific job, and life in the country where the job takes place.
Being a good listener is also a must. Hear what the interviewer is saying to you, and take it in. Don’t feel pressured to talk all the time. Even taking a few moments to gather your thoughts after each question shows that you are a careful and considerate person.
4. Get ready!
Competition for teaching jobs in many locations is fierce, so you really need to try your best. Consider beforehand what separates you from other candidates. Is it your enthusiasm? Your teaching experience? Perhaps your ability in the local language is a strength. Whatever it is, go into the interview feeling confident and put yourself across in a way that shows that you are the person for that job.
