There is currently no rail system in operation in Qatar, although there are plans in place for the development of a rail network that when built will connect all countries in the Persian Gulf. The proposed rail system will include light rail trains, monorails, trams and other systems.
The buses are of a high standard and are very modern with air conditioning as the bus system was only recently introduced. The bus network connects most towns and is a convenient, cheap way of getting around.
Metered taxis are readily available in all the main towns and can also be pre-booked from one of the many taxi companies in operation in Qatar. There are older and newer taxis available with the newer taxis charging higher fares. After driving taxis are the main form of transportation used in Doha.
Qatar has a good road system however driving standards can be erratic so drivers who are not local are advised to take care and drive cautiously. An international driving permit is required for non nationals. If taking up residency you are required to apply for a national driving licence and take a driving test.
