France Country Profile - Education System

There are two sorts of universities: universités and grandes ecoles. The latter focus on science and business and have very competitive entrance exams (they account for only 5% of the student population). There are large numbers of public universities. There may be 2 or 3 in one town, meaning that they can be quite small institutions. Fees at the moment are very low (150-700E per year) as universities are subsidised by the state. Fees at grandes ecoles vary depending on the institution.
