Greek transport networks have become much more modern during the last 20 years. The railway network has over 2500 km of track. Athens is the only city that has an underground railway system and a tram network.
Main roads are divided into motorways and national roads. There is little river transport because of the mountainous nature of the country, but there are some coastal canals and coastal ports are very important in linking mainland Greece with its islands and the rest of Europe. Much of Greece’s tourism relies on sea traffic such as cruise ships.
Transport within and to Greece by plane is also very important. A country that relies so much on tourism has an unusual number of airports for its size: 82 in total.
