There are only a few publicly funded schools in Macau. These use Portuguese as their language of education.
The other schools are privately run and are mostly grammar schools offering a wide ranging academic education. There are very few vocational training schools. In the last years of secondary school, students choose whether they’d like to study arts, sciences or commerce.
In order to go to university, students often sit examinations set by overseas boards based in the UK or China. There are many universities and polytechnics in Macau, but many of its young people go abroad to study to get experience of living and studying in a different culture. One of those universities is the City University of Macau which is an international university.
