Macau Country Profile: Business Etiquette

People in Macau are polite and usually honest and considerate. Rules of behaviour are formal and conservative but visitors are given a high regard and are respected. Macau culture is progressive but also emphasises the traditional values of respect and honour: taking the best from the eastern and western cultures which influence it. As in China, ‘face’ is important in Macau, so do not do anything to embarrass your colleagues at the meeting.

Business etiquette is similar to that in Hong Kong. Greet a stranger with a warm handshake and asking how they are. Punctuality will be expected, so make an effort to be on time, if not early, for your meetings. Gift giving is important if you are invited to someone’s home and will encourage a good relationship but if meeting in a formal business environment there is no need to bring gifts. Clothes should be formal for a business meeting, but for social engagements casual clothes can be worn.
