Portugal Country Profile - Travel

The motorway network (run by an organisation known as ‘Brisa’) in Portugal was nationalised under the socialist government of the 1980s and expanded only a little. In the 1990s transport became a priority and the road network is now well developed and modern.

Railways in Portugal are run by the state.  The system is known as the Comboios de Portugal. The network links with Spain and runs on the same gauge. Lisbon and Porto both have subway systems and Porto also has a tram network. Major towns and cities also have a local bus system. Portugal is an important destination for transiting via air because of its strategic position. The main airports are at Faro, Porto, Lisbon and Funchal (for Madeira).
