Vietnam Country Profile - Travel

The north-south railway is very important to Vietnam’s economy and identity. The railway is state owned.  Unfortunately the transport infrastructure is not always in excellent condition due to underfunding, and breakdowns and accidents are fairly common. Vietnam is connected to China by railway and there are plans to develop a connection with Cambodia and Laos within the next decade.

The road system in Vietnam is diverse. Recently, fast expressways have been built, but many of Vietnam’s roads are dangerous because the lack of regulation of traffic means that too many slow vehicles are allowed to congest traffic.

Ho Chi Minh and Hai Phong are the two most important sea ports in Vietnam, handling mostly commercial traffic. There are three major airports, Hanoi, Danang and Ho Chi Minh, served by Vietnam Airlines and many international carriers.
