Norway Country Profile - Travel

The density of transport networks is lower in Norway than some other developed countries because of the low population. Until recently Norway relied mostly on water travel, but in the second half of the 20th century air, road and rail services were improved.

Since the 1960s air travel has been commonly used to move long distances within Norway, such as Oslo to Bergen. Oslo is the main airport and is the hub for Scandinavian Airlines.

The railway system is state funded and comprises mostly slow-speed long distance lines although some high speed lines are planned for the future. There are tram systems in Oslo, Trondheim and Bergen.

The road system in Norway is improving and car ownership increasing, but many routes in the mountainous regions remain impassable throughout the winter months. Fast ferries are a much more efficient and common way of travelling around the fjords and islands.
