Mexico Country Profile - Education System

Education  is governed by the Secretariat of Public Education. There are some universities that are independent, but most education is state run. Religious organisations are no longer allowed to run state-funded schools, but increasingly there are private religious schools.

Schools are divided into three levels, primary, junior high and high school. Some schools offer a bilingual education (in Spanish and English or French) from primary level. At High School students usually study for the SEP or University Incorporated exam, but increasingly the International Baccalaureate is offered.

Higher Education follows the US model with four year bachelor’s degrees, two year masters and three year doctorates.
