Mexico Country Profile - Travel

The road system of Mexico is extensive and is the largest paved road network in Latin America. Most of this is small undivided roads or two lane roads, but there is also a system of expressways that are funded by tolls. The busiest expressways link Mexico City with Guadalajara and Monterrey.

Mexico has had a privatised rail network since 1998. It also has several light rail and metro systems in large cities such as Mexico City and Monterrey.

Air travel is safe and of a high standard, the infrastructure is the most advanced in Latin America. The largest and busiest airports are at Mexico City and Cancun. Mexico has more than 70 domestic airlines, with the most important being Aeromexico.

Mexico also has significant sea traffic on the Gulf coast and the Pacific Ocean. Most of this traffic goes through four ports: Altamira and Veracruz in the Gulf and Manzanillo and Lazaro Cardenas on the Pacific.
