Mexico Country Profile - Business Etiquette

The family is still at the centre of Mexican social structure and all Mexicans consider it their duty to help out family members in difficulties. The father is the traditional head of household. Equally, society as a whole is stratified and so you should expect any business that you work with to be hierarchical and traditional.

It is important to make the right connections because otherwise your business negotiations will go nowhere. Make sure that you are introduced by a reputable contact because you will be judged by their reputation too.

You should be prompt for a business meeting although your Mexican contacts may not be. It is usual for meetings to start late so it is important not to show any annoyance about this. Because Mexicans respect hierarchy, make sure you have a senior member of your company on the negotiating team.

Dress is conservative but similar to Europe. Make sure you prepare business cards in Spanish and English. If you do not speak Spanish, hire an interpreter and have all your materials produced in both languages.
