Education is based on the British model. At primary school students follow a broad curriculum to prepare them for secondary school. They have to pass an exam at the end of primary school.
At secondary school, students have a chance to take Spanish and French as second languages. If students wish to stay on to sixth form, they prepare for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Exams (equivalent to the British A levels).
University level education can be pursued by those students who pass their CAPE exams. This is offered by a range of publically funded institutions such as the University of the West Indies as well as by American universities with extensions of their programmes based in Jamaica.
