Jamaica Country Profile - Business Etiquette

Family life and religion are very important to Jamaicans so do not insult them by talking controversially on these topics. Handshakes with eye contact are the most usual form of greeting. Do not use someone’s first name until invited to do so.

Jamaicans often stand very close when talking to one another, so you may feel that your personal space is being invaded.

Networking and relationship building is essential to developing a good working relationship. Do not try to rush negotiations as this will appear dishonest. Jamaicans can be direct and will tell you what they think, and they expect the same in return.

They will expect you to show deference to those in authority. High pressure tactics will not work and will be seen as hostile.
