Brazil Country Profile - Business Etiquette

The standard greeting is a handshake between men and two kisses, one on each cheek, between women. If a woman wants to shake a man’s hand she will extend her hand first. Brazilians like to spend a long time getting to know the individual that they will be doing business with. The company’s reputation will be meaningless if a personal rapport is not developed.

Although the culture is informal, criticising someone publically will cause embarrassment and will sour relations. It will also be considered rude if you try to rush the negotiating period. In Sao Paulo and Brasilia, promptness is valued, but outside those areas you may be kept waiting for a business meeting.

Business dress is very formal, with suits indicating rank. Women are encouraged to wear suits but still to dress in a feminine manner, with attention paid to personal grooming such as manicures. Business cards are regularly exchanged, so have one side of your card translated into Portuguese.
