Croatia Country Profile - Education System

Primary and secondary education is available to all for free and this right is enshrined in the country’s constitution. Much of the higher education system is also free. The education sector has developed considerably in the last decade but there is still a shortage of trained teachers.

Primary school children begin learning German, French or Italian as soon as they start school. Secondary education is notionally optional, but most Croats go on to secondary education.

The higher education system is divided into polytechnics and universities. Since the implementation of the Bologna process, Croatian universities offer Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral programmes.
