Croatia Country Profile - Business Etiquette

Croatians have a strong sense of national identity and a link with the Catholic church. Family life is also very important to them.

Greeting is by handshake with eye contact but a first meeting may be hesitant and reserved. Do not use first names, this is reserved for close friends and family.

Being direct and straightforward is respected in Croatia. Attempts at ‘sales talk’ will be viewed with suspicion. Don’t be aggressive or overconfident. Meetings are often lengthy with flexible agendas. Be prepared for your business to take a lot longer than expected!

Business cards are exchanged but with no formal ritual. It will make your contacts feel important if you have one side of your card translated into Croat.
