Malta Country Profile - Travel

Traffic in Malta drives on the left and car ownership is very high (the fifth highest per capita in the world). The network of roads is well maintained. Buses are a very important means of transport. Most depart from the central bus terminal in Valetta. The buses are a tourist attraction in their own right because many of them originate from the early twentieth century. In 2011 the island’s public transport system was taken over by the German Arriva group.

Ferry services connect Malta with Gozo (an island in the Maltese archipelago) and Sicily.

Malta International Airport is the only airport that serves the island. The national carrier is Air Malta. There are express buses from the airport into Valetta.
