Hungary Country Profile - Business Etiquette

Men and women usually greet each other by shaking hands, although kisses might be exchanged by people who know each other well. Eye contact is important and is seen as an indication of sincerity.

Use a title and surname to address your contacts until invited to use their first names. Hungarians like formality and etiquette, so make sure you behave in a formal manner in business negotiations. Punctuality is vital, and do not remove your jacket or tie unless your Hungarian contacts do so first.

It is not necessary to develop a long term social relationship with your business contacts, they will be happy to conduct business with you immediately. Hungarians prefer face to face meetings and can be quite emotive and they will expect others to be the same.

Deals will often be finalised over drinks and a meal. Have your business card and business documents translated into Hungarian.
