The railway system is modern and state-owned. The hubs of the system are Sofia and Plovdiv. Although the network hasn’t been expanded since the 1980s, there are currently plans to raise the operating speed. Sofia has a metro system with the second line due to be opened in 2012.
Sofia is the main international airport in Bulgaria which experienced an increase in capacity in 2008 with the opening of its second terminal. Bulgaria Air is the national carrier, which was established in 2006.
The country has invested huge sums in its road building programme, both internally and to link Bulgaria with Turkey and Greece. It currently has 6 motorways with the capacity set to increase by 50% in the coming years.
