Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) aims to bring together the best practice from two leading universities, Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) in China and the University of Liverpool (UoL) in the United Kingdom. XJTLU aims to become a research-led international university in China and a Chinese university recognised internationally for its unique features in learning and teaching, research, service to society and education management.
The undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is research-led with the expectation that the majority of staff within the academic departments are research active. To gain external visibility the research is organised into research institutes. This allows staff to pursue their research specialisms across departmental boundaries. The aim is for every centre to have a high international visibility.
XJTLU orientates itself towards applied research, aiming at enhancing Suzhou Industrial Park’s (SIP) research infrastructure, in return for which XJTLU expects to gain yet further support from the local government. XJTLU is also well positioned as the Sino-UK bridge for research collaboration, serving both as a portal for research talents entering China and a showcase for local research potential to the world at large. The University will further encourage and promote knowledge exchange activity with SIP, and entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity will become key themes in undergraduate and taught Masters provision.
The University encourages the further development of an increasingly interdisciplinary, social science/humanities dimension to technological and scientific challenges. There are a number of research themes, including:
Research activity and programme development is supported by an active Industrial Advisory Board, bringing together representatives from leading multinational and Chinese companies located on Suzhou Industrial Park.
The $250m north campus development programme provides state-of-the-art teaching, laboratory, research and support facilities. This includes a brand new Central Library, first-class fully-equipped science and engineering laboratories, International Business School Suzhou and design studios.
The campus also has conference facilities, tennis and basketball courts, a sports field, and a variety of catering facilities.
Looking ahead, construction of the south campus development is already underway, with Phase I set for completion in 2015/16.
