Twenty-one subject areas at Cardiff have been awarded the top 'Excellent' rating for teaching in government-sponsored assessments of teaching quality. Cardiff is also one of the most successful research universities in Britain.
The most recent Research Assessment Exercise, an independent government assessment of the quality of university research, resulted in Cardiff being placed 7th in a ranking of 106 universities. No fewer than twenty-four research areas were awarded the top Grade 5 rating. Seven of these were further distinguished by the award of a * rating. Eighty-seven per cent of the University's assessed research staff now work in Grade 5 or 5* departments, recognised as undertaking work of national and international significance.
Established by Royal Charter in 1883, the University today combines impressive modern facilities and a dynamic approach to teaching and research with its proud heritage of service and achievement. It is a member of the Russell Group of leading UK universities.
