One ESRC PhD Studentship and Four Departmental Bursaries

Applications are invited for 1 ESRC Quota Studentship and 4 Departmental Bursaries to commence in October 2010. The ESRC award may be for '1+3', or '+3' for candidates who already hold an ESRC recognised Masters degree. Successful applicants for a '1+3' award will take an initial year of research training by doing the MSc in Environmental Psychology, MSc in Forensic Psychology, MSc in Health Psychology, MSc in Occupational & Organisational Psychology, MSc in Research Methods in Psychology, or the MSc in Social Psychology.

The Department of Psychology is a major contributor to postgraduate training in the UK. In terms of the number of students at postgraduate level, it is now the largest department in the country. It provides an active and vibrant research environment for PhD students. The Department has state of the art facilities in experimental and neuroimaging laboratories (EEG, MRI and TMS), a driving simulator and facilities for behavioural observation.

Proposals are encouraged in any of the areas in which the Department has expertise which include social, environmental, health and developmental psychology, as well as cognitive, social and clinical neuroscience.

We particularly welcome applications in the following areas:

  • cognitive processes in anxiety disorders
  • environmental psychology, e.g. climate change, consumer behaviour
  • occupational psychology, e.g. organisational identity, organisational decision making, work-life balance
  • forensic psychology, e.g. sexual violence
  • health and well-being, e.g. food, consumer behaviour and health
  • neuroscience, e.g. understanding creativity
  • neuropsychology, e.g. sleep and cognition in neurodisorders.

ESRC full studentships are open to UK residents, EU nationals who have lived in the UK for at least 3 years immediately prior to the award, or non-EU nationals who have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years immediately prior to the award for purposes other than education. ESRC maintenance grants are worth £13,290 per annum (the rate in 2009-10) and do not attract income tax or national insurance. Departmental Bursaries will be awarded for up to 3 years. In addition to payment of fees, maintenance grants for bursary studentships are worth £10,800 per annum (the rate in 2010-11) and do not attract income tax or national insurance. PhD students also have the opportunity, and are encouraged, to undertake undergraduate teaching in the department. Bursary students are required to do so as part of their bursary.
