Open Rank Faculty Position, Political Sociology/Social Movements

The School of Public Policy (SPP) at Central European University in Budapest was launched in 2011. With a focus on global issues and a practice orientation, it is dedicated to making public policy innovative, inclusive, and effective. SPP is, in the words of its founder, George Soros, a “new kind of global institution dealing with global problems” through multi-disciplinary study of public policy, innovative teaching and research, as well as meaningful engagement with policy practice.

Central European University is a graduate-level “crossroads” university where faculty and students from more than 100 countries come to engage in interdisciplinary education, pursue advanced scholarship, and address some of society’s most vexing problems.

SPP has an opening for a specialist on social movement organizations, social movement politics and the policy process, including the social actions and dynamics of civil society, uncivil society, and transnational and grassroots movements. This position is full-time and open to all ranks. SPP would like to fill this position promptly.

The newly appointed faculty members will help shape SPP’s research agenda, teaching programs, and engagement with practice. We seek academic entrepreneurs ready to contribute to a vibrant intellectual community and committed to improving public policy worldwide through innovative teaching, excellent research, and extensive engagement with policy practice, including by cooperating with CEU’s sister organization, the Open Society Foundations and its many civil society partners.

The ideal candidates will:

  • Have outstanding academic credentials (Ph.D. and/or equivalent and a well-recognized publications record reflective of rank) in political sociology or political science or other relevant social science, and pursue an ambitious research agenda. SPP can hire “professors of practice” who lack conventional academic qualifications but who have exceptional field experience in the subject of concentration;
  • Exhibit a passion for teaching and project / thesis supervision and an openness to employ innovative teaching methods;
  • Be able to teach components of the core curriculum to MPA students as well as offer elective courses on social movement organizations, including in relation to ‘old’ and ‘new’ civil society movements and linkages to democracy, development, human rights, peace, and the rule of law. Familiarity with contending theories of civil society, as well as experience with concrete cases, is a must.
  • Contribute to the development of an interdisciplinary curriculum and be able to collaborate with faculty across disciplines;
  • Have the ambition and talent to influence salient debates on global policy;
  • Be committed to building a world-class institution.

Preferred qualifications:
Candidates with research / practice experience in Africa, Asia, Middle East, or other Global South regions will be preferred.

We encourage applications from candidates who are willing to make a long-term commitment to living and working in Budapest.

Compensation
An internationally competitive salary is offered commensurate with experience. Central European University offers an attractive benefits package. The normal full-time teaching load is 12 credits or 24 ECTS, spread over three terms.

How to apply:

Letters of application should systematically address the above selection criteria. The application package should consist of a single PDF file with (1) an application letter (not exceeding 1,200 words) which indicates the name and rank of the position to which you are applying, (2) CV, (3) the contact information of three references, (4) a statement of teaching philosophy, and (5) up to two academic writing samples (one can be co-authored). Two sample syllabi may be attached as separate PDF files.
