Professor and Head of the Department of Engineering and Design

Department of Engineering and Design

Professorial Salary is determined by negotiation (The minimum full-time salary for a newly promoted Professor is £56,482 per annum)

The University of Sussex wishes to appoint a Professor (and lecturer) to lead the Department of Engineering and Design. This appointment is part of a programme of continuing investment in the School of Engineering and Informatics. In addition to this post and the nine recent appointments to Engineering and Design, seven further academic and two technician positions will be advertised and appointed for the Department of Engineering and Design.

In the past three years, this flourishing department has seen major investment in people and equipment. The Department believes this made a major contribution to the recent acquisition of £10m for a new CREaM Centre encompassing Computing, Robotics, Electronics and Mechatronics, making Sussex an exciting place for engineering and engineers.

The teaching and research in the Department of Engineering and Design is diverse, including automotive engineering, dynamics and control, image and signal processing, mobile digital communications, product design and creative technologies, sensor technology, solid and fluid mechanics, tribology and turbomachinery. Research includes both theoretical and applied, with the applied work leading to spin-out companies, commercialisation and long-term collaborations with world-leading organisations.

The successful applicant will have an international reputation for excellence in research, ideally in a mechanical engineering field that complements the activities of the Department, and a proven record of academic or research management. They will further strengthen the Department and spearhead its future development.

Applications for the position should be accompanied by a full CV, a statement of individual research plans, and a vision for the future development of the Department.

Informal enquiries may be addressed either to Dr H Prance, current Head of the Department of Engineering and Design, H.Prance@sussex.ac.uk; or Professor D J Mynors, Head of School, D.J.Mynors@sussex.ac.uk.

The selection process requires candidates to be available on both the 12 and 13 October 2015.
