Senior Research Officer

Talk to a man with prostate cancer – or his family – and you'll understand why they are the center of everything we do. It's a devastating disease and by 2030 it's predicted to be the most prevalent cancer in the UK. We're the only UK organisation taking this disease head-on, and we've got a lot of work to do. Become part of the team at Prostate Cancer UK and help make a difference to men’s lives.

We believe men deserve better. Do you?

Senior Research Officer

£35,061 per annum

Based at The Counting House, London Bridge

What the job involves

Funding research that will improve the lives of men with prostate cancer, and those at high risk, is one of Prostate Cancer UK’s highest priorities. Our partnership with The Movember Foundation has enabled us to significantly increase the amount of top-class research we fund, and as the charity’s income continues to grow, we are now planning to fund even more. With an increasing budget, we will be seeing more funding rounds, more applications, and more projects supported. And we will need to make sure that everyone knows why we fund the research we do, and the difference it makes to men. We are looking to appoint an additional Senior Research Officer, to ensure we can manage this extra work and continue to deliver the most impact from every pound we spend.

You will be the main contact for around a third of our active grants, whilst building strong relationships with researchers, their institutions, and our expert advisors, gaining a detailed understanding of the science. You will be responsible for finding peer reviewers to assess applications for funding, making sure that we only fund the very best projects with the greatest chance of making a real difference for men. As well as these core responsibilities, you will also be responsible for helping other teams to understand and use the research we fund. This role will develop your expertise in grant management and, at the same time, will allow you to build your understanding and experience of how a research funding charity works beyond the traditional role of a Research Officer.

What we want from you

This is a really important role to the organisation, as we have an ambitious plan for our funding over the next three years and beyond, and we need somebody who can hit the ground running. Therefore, we are looking for someone with significant experience of grant management, and critical of finding peer reviewers for biomedical research grant applications. You will have a degree, or equivalent, in a relevant subject, and specific experience of cancer research is desirable.

You will have lots of contact with researchers and colleagues at all levels across the charity, so you will need to be a confident and clear communicator, both orally and in writing.

We are excited about achieving major improvements for men, and anyone who joins the team will need to be motivated by that, be enthusiastic and able to work flexibly and effectively as part of a small team, whilst also delivering on individual responsibilities.

The support we will provide

Join our team and you will be working at an award-winning charity that will help you learn, develop your skills and expertise, and achieve your highest aspirations. We provide everything you would expect from a professional organisation – a competitive benefits package, a contributory pension scheme, life insurance, childcare vouchers, and a season ticket loan, plus much more. Work with us, and you will see your efforts pay off as we fight for a better future for men.
