Academic Roles

Our roots go back to 1869. We have grown in size and strength, creating and sharing success with our students, staff, community and society.

We have an excellent reputation for quality teaching and sustained, high levels of student satisfaction. Our commitment to preparing our students for their future career is evident in every course, dedicated careers and recruitment services and a strong graduate employment track record. More than this, students have access to fantastic facilities in a vibrant city campus on the beautiful South Coast - only 90 minutes from central London. We have a population of over 21 thousand students and almost two and a half thousand staff. 85% of our students are studying undergraduate courses. We have almost four thousand international and European Union students, from over 140 different countries. Over 88% of our 2013 graduates went straight into work or chose to continue their studies. We have invested in excess of £100 million into our buildings and resources over the last ten years.

Faculty of Technology
The Faculty’s vision statement conveys our ambition to deliver a sustainable portfolio of activities in engineering, computing, mathematics and cosmology that enhances the Faculty’s external profile and recognition by providing an outstanding student learning experience, delivering internationally recognised and world leading research and innovation, and optimising opportunities for graduate employability.

All our programmes are accredited to the maximum attainable level, normally for a Chartered professional / practitioner. We are proud to be among the first universities in the country to offer professional accreditation from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) to placement students from the School of Engineering and the School of Computing. Students who successfully complete a placement in a relevant field to their degree will be eligible to apply for ICTTech or EngTech professional registration.

Our research reputation is growing and the recent REF results confirm the Faculty standing in 4 Units of Assessment (UoA) with the following key headlines:

  • UoA 9: Physics - 96% of research outputs world-leading (4*) or internationally (3*) excellent
  • UoA 10: Mathematics - 62% of submission was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent
  • UoA 11: Computer Science & Informatics: 64% either world leading or internationally excellent and 100% of impact was rated as either outstanding (4*) 40%, or as being very considerable (3*) 60%
  • UoA 12: Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering - 61% of research outputs were rated as either world-leading or internationally excellent.

We have increased the proportion of staff returned to the REF by 50% and secured an increase in QR funding by approximately 35%. We continue to generate substantial research and innovation funds from UK research council, European research council, and businesses.
