Master of Science (MSc) in Cognitive Neuroscience & Neuroimaging
University of Nottingham - School of Psychology
Applications are invited for the above MSc course to study brain processes underlying sensory perception, memory, decision making, motor control, and other cognitive functions, cognitive neuroscience relies heavily on technology that has been developed only in the last two decades. In particular, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) permit non-invasive measurements in humans.
Interdisciplinary training is indispensable to use such technology to its full potential. To match this need, the MSc course comprises topics from neuroimaging and cognitive neuroscience, thereby appealing to graduates from psychology and neuroscience as well as physics and mathematics.
The course combines lectures and practical work under supervision. Throughout the course, the focus is on using neuroimaging optimally for the purposes of (human) neuroscience research. The interdisciplinary faculty comprises lecturers from the University of Nottingham (School of Psychology, Sir Peter Mansfield Magnetic Resonance Centre, Division of Academic Radiology) and the MRC Institute of Hearing Research. As a result, lectures on methods (MRI, fMRI, MEG, EEG/ERP, TMS, and behavioural) are closely linked to teaching in cognitive neuroscience, enabling students to develop efficient experimental designs. In practical classes students learn to develop computer-based experiments, to use the SPM software package for fMRI evaluation, and to apply advanced statistics. In an independent research project, students are supervised by a member of the MSc Faculty and can use psychophysics, EEG/ERP, or TMS in the School of Psychology or MEG/(f)MRI in the Sir Peter Mansfield Magnetic Resonance Centre, depending on the research topic.
