CHAIR IN WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY AND GEOLOGY


Applications are invited for the post of Chair in Water Resources Management in the Geography and Geology Department at the University of the West Indies located at Mona. This post was originally funded by the Alcoa Foundation/JAMALCO/Alumina Partners of Jamaica (ALPART) and the former Kaiser Jamaica Bauxite Company.

The successful applicant will be required to have postgraduate qualifications in at least one of the following fields: Hydrogeology, Hydrology, Water Resources Engineering, or Water Resources Management.

The emphasis will be on groundwater in tropical limestone areas. Expertise is required in computer modeling of groundwater in karst terrains.

The appointee should have an international reputation in the field Development and Management of Water Resources. He/she will be expected to develop and execute a programme of pure and applied research, and of practical professional training leading to the award of postgraduate degrees in water resources management. He/she will be expected to take a leadership role in the teaching, research and outreach activities of the programme.

The successful candidate will be required to:
  • Build a vibrant programme in Water Resources at the post-graduate level
  • Develop and execute a competitive research programme in Water Resources especially in karst terrains.
  • Develop and execute programmes of study leading to graduate degrees.
  • Assist with the development and implementations of undergraduate courses in Hydrogeology.
  • Take a leading role in the research, teaching, outreach, consultancy and training (relevant short courses) activities related to Water Resources Management.
  • Initiate and prepare grant proposals to support Water Resource Management activities
  • Pull together the diverse expertise within the University's three campuses to create a virtual Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Management that effectively engages issues such as water quality monitoring and management, mathematical modeling of groundwater in karst terrains, modeling and simulation of hydrological processes, climate change impacts on water resources, flooding saltwater intrusion, artificial recharge and transport or fate of microorganisms in water bodies, governance of water resources, impact of waste water and other sources of pollution, re-use of treated effluent, emerging issues in water resources.

The appointment will be for three years in the first instance.
