Director of Dentistry

University of Aberdeen -School of Medicine and Dentistry, Division of Medical and Dental Education

The University seeks to appoint a Director of Dentistry following the recent retirement of Professor Jim Newton, who successfully established the undergraduate course leading to a BDS jointly awarded by the Universities of Aberdeen and Dundee at the Aberdeen Dental School.

Applications are invited from Dental Surgeons qualified to consultant level with expertise in any area of Dentistry.  Applicants with qualifications in Restorative Dentistry are particularly welcome.  The successful candidate will provide professional and educational leadership for the Dental School team and inspirational development of its teaching and research.  There are good opportunities for research in laboratory, health services or educational research projects with excellent facilities and a supportive culture provided in the Institutes of Medical Science and Applied Health Science on the same campus as the Dental School.

The development of a new Dental School in the Grampian Region of Scotland was a manifesto commitment of the Scottish Government to help to provide a suitably qualified dental workforce for the country’s needs. The School opened in September 2008 offering a graduate-entry four-year programme. The new custom-built Dental School building was completed in autumn 2009 and clinical and academic teaching activities have been taking place there since November 2009.

There are 20 dental students in each year undertaking a post graduate entry curriculum (Five year course with four years taught dental programme and one exemption year for appropriate prior degree). The course is run alongside the training of other dental care professionals and a programme of postgraduate courses and professional development activities is being developed.  From the outset there was a joint approach with the University of Dundee and a joint degree has been awarded.  This is expected to change to the University of Aberdeen in the next year.

The contract for the post will be held with the University of Aberdeen and an honorary contract will be sought with NHS Grampian.  All applicants must be fully registered with the General Dental Council.  This post will be based in the Division of Medical and Dental Education (DMDE) within the School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Clinical Staff Salary Scale for Staff holding Honorary Consultant contracts £74,504 - £100,446 per annum), with placement according to qualifications and experience.

Informal enquiries are welcome and should be made to Professor David Reid, Head of School of Medicine and Dentistry (d.m.reid@abdn.ac.uk or 01224 437966) or Dr Rona Patey, Head of Division of Medical and Dental Education (r.patey@abdn.ac.uk or 01224 437972).
