The Department of Aeronautics is looking for a Laboratory Services and Instrumentation Supervisor to manage the activities of our laboratory services. You will manage a wide range of activities in sophisticated high-technology Laboratories and Wind Tunnels within the Department of Aeronautics. You will supervise a team of skilled technical staff ensuring that a productive research environment is created for laboratory users.

The Aeronautics mechanical workshops and Structures section are busy and vibrant research support facilities involved in the design and production of complex models and mechanical parts for research and teaching purposes. Your role will be to liaise closely with the supervisors of these areas to ensure that the resulting technical output can be accommodated by your team, throughout our laboratory facilities.

You will be the main point of contact for the department’s academics, researchers and students who wish to develop instrumentation, projects and experiments for research and teaching activities within our Aerodynamics and Structures sections and this may also involve your participation in training or teaching. You will utilise your in-depth technical expertise and management skills to provide a significant contribution to the design, construction, development and running of brand new state-of-the-art laboratories, equipment and facilities for this world-leading Aeronautics department.

You will be a specialist in applied electronic design and theory and be capable of working with complex electronic circuits in areas such as analogue and digital electronics. An understanding of control theory and its application to facilities such as wind tunnels would be highly desirable. In addition you will be proficient in the fields of power electronics, instrumentation, data acquisition and computing systems including the handling and analysis of data.

You should have experience managing staff and research programmes and be conversant with mechanical engineering design and production techniques, being able to work from verbal instructions as well as technical and CAD drawings. You should have at least an HNC, Degree or equivalent qualification in Electronic Engineering and have substantial practical experience.
