The Job
This is a two year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between Mach Acoustics the department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the University of Bath. The design restrictions imposed by acoustics are too often the reason why low carbon ventilation strategies are not adopted. This research program aims to study/analyse the interaction and complexities of integrating sustainable building design with acoustics. However, the bulk of this project will be to develop a better understanding of and model in detail, the acoustic parameters of components forming a buildings’ ventilation strategy, i.e. open windows, screened vents, attenuated vents, plenum systems, cross ventilators, stack and other elements. Having taken a holistic research approach we aim to change the way future sustainable buildings are designed.
The Company
MACH Acoustics provide acoustic consultancy across all the areas of the built environment. In particular they consult on the acoustics of low-carbon buildings, assessing how sound and air will move through buildings. Their sustainable acoustic products and consultancy focuses on preventing noise ingress and the transfer of sound through low pressure-drop air paths. For further details see www.machacoutics.com
Candidate Profile
Our preferred candidate should have a 1st, 2.1, or higher degree in, Acoustics, Architectural Engineering, or a closely related engineering field, (such as mechanical engineering, building science, or building services). Such candidates should demonstrate an interest in building physics and low-carbon building performance, however candidates with a 1st, 2.1 or higher degree in pure/applied Physics will also be considered. Ideally you will have some postgraduate academic/industrial experience in a construction related organisation. Additionally we will expect you to demonstrate:
- The ability to undertake detailed, rigorous dynamic modeling with good quality control of monitoringprocedures
- Exceptional analysis and modeling skills, including Matlab coding, FE modeling, parametric/dynamic building modeling (IES)
- The ability to undertake full research projects
- The abilityto be academically inquisitive and balanced with intuitive engineering awareness
- The ability to work as part of a dynamic and multi-disciplinary team
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
If you feel that you have the skill and ambition to manage this challenging project please make an application.
In addition to the salary and training budget the job includes the opportunity to study for a higher degree
