Aberystwyth University is seeking to appoint a Pro Vice-Chancellor - Welsh Language and Culture, following the appointment of Professor Aled Jones to the post of Chief Executive and Librarian of the National Library of Wales.

The importance of Welsh language and culture to the aspirations of Aberystwyth University cannot be overstated. The Pro Vice-Chancellor will report to Professor April McMahon, Vice-Chancellor, and will be a member of the University Executive Group and principal decision-making bodies within the University, including Council and Senate and the relevant major committees which report to them.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Welsh Language and Culture will play a key role in driving forward the programme of change as the University moves into the next phase of its development to implement its ambitious five-year Strategic Plan.

While the primary focus of the role will be Welsh language and culture, the Pro Vice-Chancellor will lead on specific additional areas of responsibility to be determined in discussion with the Vice-Chancellor and dependent on the skills and experience of the successful candidate.  The portfolios of the University Executive Group are open to negotiation with the possibility of moving some areas of responsibility to best meet the needs of the University.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor’s term of office will be five years, including a one year probationary period. This initial term may be renewed for one further period of five years, or such other shorter period as may be determined by Council. This role will be underpinned by a substantive post at an appropriate grade. For a suitably qualified candidate, this post will be a Professorship in one of the University's departments.
