MPhil/PhD Scholarship:

Predicting degradation of bulk solids during pneumatic conveying

University of Greenwich -School of Engineering: The Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology

(Ref: PGRO-ENG-03-13)

Description: One of the world’s largest chemical companies is creating a postgraduate study opportunity at the University of Greenwich in the UK, to research and develop a method for predicting breakage of particles in process plants. Study will be at The Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology at the University’s campus in Chatham, Kent a world-leading centre of expertise in powder handling.

Particulate materials concern all process industries from food and chemicals to pharmaceuticals, mining and power generation. This project will employ leading-edge technology to investigate experimentally the behaviour and breakage of the particles in flow, and modelling this behaviour with a view to producing a tool-kit that can be used by engineers in industry to control this problem which costs billions of dollars world-wide.

The candidate will be registered initially for MPhil, and will transfer to PhD subject to suitable progression; the duration will be 3 years, mostly based in Chatham in Kent but with time spent in Germany as well. An interest in practical work, and potentially working overseas ultimately, would be advantageous.

The successful candidate will receive a £13,900 bursary for three years and tuition fees will be paid by the collaborating partner

Applicants must hold a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (UK or UK equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
