This technical post is integral to the successful delivery of a large programme of laboratory, glasshouse and field experiment and trials. This includes projects funded by the Scottish Government, UK Research Council and Levy Boards. The successful candidate will provide support to researchers and other technical staff across the Crop and Soil Systems Research Group and play a key role in maintaining a substantial crop physiology and agronomy programme. He/She will receive training in a wide range of laboratory and field techniques in plant and crop physiology. These skills will be applied to: (1) measurements of plant development, including flowering biology and components of crop yield, (2) methods in crop physiology, including measures of photosynthetic activity and water relations and (3) studies of leaf and grain structure. The post will require assessments to be carried out across a range of glasshouse and field experiments. It will also involve assisting with data entry and the writing of experiments and reports. Another key role will be to help maintain physiological equipment, including gas exchange facilities, in good order. He/She will have opportunities to developing further skills in laboratory techniques, including molecular methods and microscopy, and to become involved in field operations during crop sowing and harvest. The post-holder will perform additional duties as directed from time to time by the Line Manager. The post holder must use their initiative in the conduct of their work, and apply sound judgement at all times to ensure that they conduct themselves within the framework of SRUC regulations and procedures. Applicants must normally hold a UK honours degree or equivalent, in a relevant discipline e.g. plant biology or agricultural sciences) together with being a UK citizen or UK resident for at least three years.
The salary will be in the region of £18,475 - £21,500 per annum.
