Closing date: 28 June 2013 (Noon)

Newcastle University invites applications for the prestigious EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship. The Fellowship is an opportunity for the very best EPSRC-funded PhD students to receive twelve months of additional support following their PhD.

The EPSRC Doctoral Prize is aimed at increasing the impact of the PhD in terms of publications, knowledge transfer and outreach. The Fellowship is also designed to act as a first step towards an independent research career.

The EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellow will be required to propose a novel research project in an area which fits within the EPSRC’s funding remit http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/guidance/basics/Pages/remit.aspx

As well as undertaking significant new work the fellowship can also be used to complete key publications resulting from the PhD, develop research networks, facilitate knowledge transfer and deliver outreach activities. The scheme is designed to offer support and flexibility and the exact details of the fellowship should be outlined by the applicant.

The EPSRC Doctoral Prize aims to develop independent researchers and applicants are encouraged to move into new areas of research and demonstrate the ability to work independently from their former PhD supervisor. External students who have not carried out their PhD studies at Newcastle University are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applicants should identify an appropriate academic member of staff at Newcastle University to discuss their planned research proposal. This Project Sponsor must be willing to support an applicant’s project and, where appropriate, host the project in their lab.

Recipients of the Fellowship will also have access to an academic mentor who will offer advice and support regarding the mentee’s research and career development throughout the duration of the award. The University will also provide Fellows with a career development training programme.
