Sessional Lecturer for Securing Human Rights Modules

The Role

Applications are invited for a part-time Sessional Lecturer for Securing Human Rights Modules, tenable from 1 September 2013 to 21 March 2014.

The Institute of Commonwealth Studies in the School of Advanced Study is home to the longest-running interdisciplinary and practice-orientated human rights MA programme in the UK, and our students benefit greatly from the participation of visiting researchers and guest speakers. As well as direct teaching of sessions of the module, a key aspect of this role will be to make efficient and effective arrangements for suitable guest lecturers.

You will also be expected to teach, to the highest standards, the modules ‘Securing Human Rights I’ and ‘Securing Human Rights II’ as part of the MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights. In addition, you will assist students on the module to place the contributions by guest lecturers in their appropriate academic, legal and/or practitioner context.

Requirements

The postholder will further strengthen the thriving teaching culture of human rights. You will have a PhD (or be demonstrably near completion) in human rights or a relevant discipline or have equivalent research experience. You will need experience of human rights practice, including work for, and with, multi-lateral, governmental or non-governmental human rights organisations. To succeed in this role, you will have teaching experience in a University institution, combined with specialist knowledge of working as a human rights practitioner.

An ability to engage students with human rights questions to ensure the continued exceptional levels of student satisfaction with the degree is essential. An open and helpful individual, you will welcome student queries and/or concerns, including pastoral care.

This is a fixed term post (0.3 FTE), available from 1 September 2013 to 21 March 2014.
