Studentship sponsored by the European Office of the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research (EOARD/ AFOSR)

Invitations are invited for a three-year PhD training studentship, sponsored by EOARD/ AFOSR. This award will be held at the Department of Psychology, City University London. The successful candidate will be supervised primarily by Dr. Emmanuel Pothos (City University London), collaboratively with Professors Jerome Busemeyer (Indiana University) and Richard Shiffrin (Indiana University).

Start date: The expected start date of the project is July 1st 2013.

Duration and scope: The PhD programme is for three years and the PhD will be in cognitive psychology/ cognitive science. The successful candidate will carry out research in judgment and decision making, using novel theoretical and computational approaches and a variety of human experimental methods.

Stipend: Approximately £16,000 per annum + home/EU full time fees (approximately £4,000 per annum).

Person Specification

Essential characteristics of applicants are:

• a good honours degree (First or high Upper Second class, or equivalent) in any of the following disciplines: Psychology, Cognitive Science, Physics, Mathematics, or Computer Science, and related disciplines Applicants in the process of obtaining such a degree will be welcome to apply as well

• evidence for a motivation to carry out quality academic work and relevant skills, such as independent thinking, good written English, and sound organizational ability

Desirable, though not essential, characteristics are:

• experience with human experimental work in judgment and decision making

• a quantitative background, which can include, for example, mathematical methods in any area and/ or basic statistical methods

• experience in programming with Matlab
