Research Fellow in Extragalactic Astronomy
University of Nottingham -School of Physics & Astronomy
Fixed-term
£28,685 per annum
Applications are invited for a fixed-term position in the astronomy group of the School of Physics & Astronomy, to work principally with Dr. Steven Bamford on the ‘MegaMorph’ project.
The successful candidate will undertake a specific programme of research, utilising a newly-developed method for measuring the structural properties of galaxies in multi-wavelength data. This technique will be combined with data from extragalactic planetary nebula and globular cluster surveys to study the links between the primary stellar components and these two tracers of galaxy star-formation, kinematic and assembly histories.
Candidates are required to have a PhD or equivalent in relevant extragalactic astronomy research. Furthermore, in order to ensure rapid progress within the timeframe of the position, candidates must have proven experience in using the galaxy decomposition software ‘GALFIT’ as well as reducing and analysing data obtained with the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph.
This full-time post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 6 months.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr. Steven Bamford via email: steven.bamford@nottingham.ac.uk. Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
