The preeminent scientific challenge of the 21st Century is to understand and quantify Earth’s current and future climate. The North Atlantic subpolar ocean is a potentially climate critical region that is closely coupled to the atmosphere, with strong dynamic connections to Europe, the tropical regions and to decadal climate variability. Observing and understanding the subpolar Atlantic circulation is therefore at the forefront of international research to predict and quantify the climate of Europe.

Over the next decade substantial resources from US and European Institutes will be deployed in the subpolar Atlantic and SAMS will be a major player in this effort. SAMS has a leading role in developing sustained observing programmes in the subpolar Atlantic through joint leadership of the UK NERC Extended Ellett Line Programme, North Atlantic Glider Base, European Framework Programme North Atlantic Climate Variability and the proposed multi-national Observing the Subpolar North Atlantic Programme.

SAMS also has a planned on-going recruitment strategy to continue building a research group for large-scale physical oceanography and climate.

We seek a Research Associate in Physical Oceanography to manage and develop SAMS expertise in basin scale ocean observations for climate and to become a future leader in the field.

The main duties of this position are:

1. To manage and lead oceanographic research cruises and Glider missions under the NERC Extended Ellett Line Programme;

2. Lead and publish 3*/4* research with a focus on analyses of data obtained during current and historical field programmes, focussing on basin-scale oceanography and climate problems in the subpolar North Atlantic;

3. Develop appropriate national and international collaborations for scientific research and;

4. Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate supervision. This post has a focus on scientific research, but also requires an independent and practical scientist to help lead the field programme.
