The School of Engineering is seeking to appoint a new Research Fellow to join the recently established the Power and Energy Systems Research Institute (PESRI), which is already exhibiting significant income growth and partnerships with industrial partners from SMEs to Multinationals. The sucessful candidate will work on the EPSRC funded project ‘Integrating and Automating Airport Operations’. This project aims to reduce airport carbon emissions by optimizing the scheduling of aircraft take-off, landings, gate assignment and baggage handling as part of a major academic consortium comprising Lincoln, Nottingham, Stirling, Shefield and Loughborough Universities, in collaboration with Manchester and Zurich Airports. The Research Fellow will apply Multiobjective Search or Optimisation methodologies, particularly Multiobjective Genetic Algorithms, and other problem solving heuristics such as Tabu and Simulated Annealing in close collaboration with the other project partners to produce a decision support framework for Air Traffic Controllers to minimise fuel burn and waiting time for aircraft on the ground at airports.
Candidates should possess a PhD or equivalent experience. Extensive knowledge and application experience of optimisation and problem solving heuristics is essential, and knowledge of airport or other transport logistics and operations would be desirable.
You will contribute to the University’s ambition to achieve international recognition as a research intensive institution and will be expected to design, conduct and project manage original research in the subject areas as well contribute to wider activities of the PESRI. Evidence of authorship of research outputs of national/international standing is essential as is the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
The University of Lincoln was awarded HEFCE Strategic Development Funding to establish a new School of Engineering at its Brayford Campus in the centre of Lincoln in 2009. This is a groundbreaking initiative, in collaboration with Siemens and other companies in the engineering sector that seeks to develop engineering education and research for the 21st century. With a specialism in power and energy, and the scope to develop related areas, the school offers undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees as well as engaging in research, knowledge transfer and employer engagement. Engineering at Lincoln is research led and informed, and we are currently carrying out funded research programmes with a diverse portfolio of UK and International companies and funding bodies in application areas ranging from gas turbine remote monitoring and diagnostics, to low carbon airport operations, to bio engineering and cell modelling.
