UCL EngD in Life Cycle Assessment

University College London

Applications are invited for an EPSRC funded EngD studentship (4 years) to research Life Cycle Carbon Calculations for New and Existing Commercial Buildings. This work will draw together the link between energy modelling in buildings and validating modelling techniques and outputs based on real world data.

UCL is one of the UK’s premier universities and is currently ranked 4th in the world (QS World University Rankings). The industrial co-sponsor, Hawkins/Brown, is an 80-strong practice based in Clerkenwell, London which has been at the forefront of British architecture for over twenty years

A successful candidate will be based at the Bartlett and Hawkins Brown offices in London, and will be supervised jointly by Dr Dejan Mumovic (UCL Bartlett School of Graduate Studies/UCL Energy Institute), Roger Hawkins (Buro Happold, Industrial supervisor) and Dr Catalina Spataru (UCL Energy Institute).

The EngD student will develop a building performance toolkit which is sufficiently flexible and simple that it can be applied to generate and communicate recommendations for specific projects in respect of a range of broad sustainable questions. For example, the case for refurbishment or new build and the optimum balance of embodied carbon and operational carbon. This includes identification of identify the most effective ways of visual communication of life carbon calculations for new and existing commercial buildings to both lay audience (clients and planning authorities) and building designers (architects and engineers)

More details can be found at the apply button below.

The studentship will cover tuition fees and a tax-free maintenance stipend (£18,500/annum for EngD). Due to funding restrictions applicants must be either be a British passport holder or an EU passport holder with either 3 years residency in the UK, or being in full time employment in the UK.

To apply, please write to Dr Dejan Mumovic at the address below with a covering letter (1 A4 page) and a full CV (including contact details for at least two academic referees plus marks/grades achieved on current courses). The covering letter should outline your interest in researching the suggested topics, and a clear statement of your eligibility for this ESPRC funded award.

The closing date for applications will initially be 15th June 2013 with a view to starting the project at the beginning of September 2013. Interviews will be held w/c 17th June 2013. If, however, insufficient good applications are received in this tight timeframe then the advert will remain open until July 2013 with a view to starting the project in September 2013. Any inquiries or further information about the studentship should be emailed to Dr Dejan Mumovic on d.mumovic@ucl.ac.uk
