An exciting opportunity has arisen for a research fellow to join our team on the molecular pathogenesis of Hodgkin lymphoma project. The project is into the molecular pathogenesis of Hodgkin lymphoma, a disease that mainly affects young adults. Modern high-throughput sequencing technology is transforming our understanding of cancers. However, Hodgkin lymphoma is unusual in that the malignant Hodgkin Reed-Sternberg (HRS) cells comprise only ~1% of the tumour, so isolating sufficient cells is challenging and no group has yet described a high throughput sequence analysis. We have initiated a project that to isolate HRS cells using both flow sorting and micro-dissection. Initial sequence data are expected in the next few months.
The project will involve further isolation of HRS cells (cell harvesting, micro-dissection, flow sorting), DNA extraction, involvement in bio-informatic analysis, PCR and conventional sequencing of candidate somatic mutations.
In addition, we have been analysing a pedigree with five cases of Hodgkin lymphoma, using both linkage analysis and exome sequencing. This part of the project will involve analysing expression patterns of candidate genes, as well as their over-expression and knock-down in cells lines.
This post is funded by The Development Trust, it will be offered for a period of 11 months.
Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 6 scale (£30,424 - £33,230 per annum) with placement according to qualifications and experience.
Informal enquiries may be made to Prof. Mark Vickers (m.a.vickers@abdn.ac.uk) or Dr Al Lawrie (alawrie@nhs.net).
