PhD Studentship
Improving aerodynamic loads prediction for aircraft applications
University of Southampton
Ref: AACE-AFM-101
Research group: Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics, Faculty of Engineering and the Environment
Deadline: Applications will be accepted at any time until the position is filled.
A PhD studentship is available immediately in the area of aircraft aerodynamic loads prediction. The studentship is funded under a UK EPSRC industry case award to Airbus. This project aims to improve aerodynamic loads prediction using advanced numerical simulation approaches. Accurate assessment of aerodynamic loads on deployed components during aircraft take-off and approach-to-land phases of operation has important impact on performance and safety. Improved load prediction will lead to more efficient aircraft design and has huge business consequences. In this research project, advanced numerical simulation tools will be employed to improve the efficiency and accuracy of loads prediction. The student will be based on Airbus Aircraft Noise Technology Centre (ANTC) at the University of Southampton and work closely with industry partners in this project. The student will also work with other researchers in ANTC on experimental and analytical aspect of the problem. A good first degree in either engineering, or mathematical, or physics is required. This PhD studentship will provide a good opportunity to work with one of the largest aerospace companies in the world, and explore relevant problems in the aerospace industry.
The Airbus Aircraft Noise Technology Centre (ANTC) opened in November 2008 at the University of Southampton. It is the result of the long standing collaboration between Airbus and the University on a range of noise research and development projects. The Centre, led by Professor Xin Zhang, brings together academic staff, research fellows and PhD students using state-of-the-art computer simulations and wind tunnel testing to develop new noise reduction concepts. Undergraduate students also work with the research team, providing exciting projects to stimulate the next-generation of engineers for industry.
The studentship fully covers university tuition fees (UK/EU) and provides a tax-free bursary of £13,900 per year, rising annually (each October) in line with the UK Government (EPSRC) recommended rate, for a 3 year duration.
