Research Assistant (Intelligent Composite Lay-up by the Application of Discrete Technologies)

Cranfield University -School of Applied Sciences, Manufacturing and Materials Department

£22,349 to £24,913 per annum (Fixed term contract for 3 months)

Cranfield University is one of the leading research centres in the area of manufacturing informatics. It is developing internationally-leading research in this area by exploiting the synergies with its research activities in the design and manufacture of composite structures. The University provides a vibrant and dynamic environment for multidisciplinary research and industrial collaboration. This is an exciting new position to support the continued growth of Cranfield’s research portfolio in manufacturing informatics and composites manufacturing. This project is a feasibility study funded by the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Composites (CIMComp). The intention is that CIMComp involvement will help to bring this study forward to a point where new funding opportunities are created. In this way, this study should grow the capabilities of the UK, CIMComp and its network of users.

This position seeks to use novel drape simulation tools such as Virtual Fabric Placement (VFP) in conjunction with discrete projection and tracking tools during composite lay-up. The aim is to use these tools to inform on drape routes during forming of the panels, and to use recorded information from the lay-up to inform productivity and quality results; as well as explore their use as virtual prototyping and training media. The main tangible result from this work will be the delivery of an understanding of the suitability of unobtrusive ICT in the composites manufacturing environment at the lay-up operator level.

You should have a first degree in a relevant engineering discipline such as mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, civil engineering or manufacturing/industrial engineering. It is essential to have an MSc or an equivalent research/work experience in the areas of ICT for manufacturing or design for manufacturing. It is also essential to have knowledge of the Microsoft Kinect gaming technology and desirable to have knowledge of the design and manufacture of composite structures. You will be required to have technical paper and article writing, organisation, analytical, communication (oral and written), and client handling skills.
